Montague (32-8 overall) opened his championship run with a first period pin over third-seeded Britt Drews of Mora. He then pinned second-seeded Marshall Ash of Milaca in the second period of their semifinal match to set up the championship match with Bonderson.
"Troy went out there and did what he's done all year," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "His main goal is to try and pin his opponent. That's what makes him fun to watch. He's a pretty exciting wrestler."
Frederixon also talked about his other senior wrestlers. He said, "All our seniors finished just fine. Shane Hultman finished fourth today and did a really good job. He was a half-inch from third place. He had the kid on his back in the third place match, but couldn't quite pin him. Tony Gall used a headlock to win his final match and take fifth place. And Mike Michaelson pinned his opponent in 40 seconds to take fifth place. It was nice to see each of them go out on a good note. The results didn't quite turn out the way they wanted, but they did a good job."
Individual preliminaries were scheduled to begin yesterday, Wednesday, February 27 at the Xcel Energy Center. Montague was scheduled to wrestle Mason Perry of Totino Grace in his opening match. Match results were not available in time for publication in this week's Press. Possible match times today, tomorrow and Saturday depend on the results of each of Montague's matches. The Section 7AA individual tournament benefited the Vikings as they qualified three wrestlers for this week's state tournament. Junior Boyd Suparat (130) and senior Greg Arnt (171) each went 3-0 to win the section championship in their respective weight classes. Freshman Jake Kostik (103) lost his first round match on Friday, but won his next five matches to finish second in the section and earn a trip to state.
Suparat (34-3 this season) dominated the 130 pound weight class, winning two of his three matches by pins. In his opening match, he pinned Hinckley's Cody Auers midway through the second period. He won over Deer River's Gary Perrington by technical fall in his second match, and capped-off the section championship pinning Andrew Youngblom of Mora with 16 seconds remaining in the first period.
"Boyd wrestled very well in this tournament," said Viking head coach Tony Aho, "and showed that hard work really pays off. He is one of the most dedicated kids in our program and deserves this title."
Arnt (34-4) opened his tournament run with a pin, dispatching Seth Petzon of Princeton with 22 seconds remaining in the first period. Arnt shut out Ammoren Dohm of Milaca 4-0 in the semifinal match, and won the section championship with a 5-0 whitewashing of Virginia's AJ Arnts. "Greg Arnt has been with us for many years," said Aho, "and we are going to be sad to see him leave. He is a great leader and a tremendous wrestler."
Kostik (31-7) wrestled through the section the hard way. He lost his first round match Keenan Edgerton of Hinckley by a 5-4 score. Kostik's comeback started with an 8-4 win over Jesse Warren of Milaca. He then needed just 20 seconds to pin Bobby Sontag of Chisago Lakes. After a 13-0 win by major decision over Michael Fuenffinger of Hibbing, Kostik pinned Alex Dahms of Mora with one second remaining in the first period. That win earned him a berth in the "true" second place match against Mitchell Jobe of Grand Rapids. Kostik completed his comeback with a flourish, beating Jobe by a 12-2 major decision. Aho said, "Jake lost early and showed a great deal of guts to come back in the wrestle-backs and dominate everyone in the weight class."
"What a great way to end the season," said Aho. "Having three guys make it to the state tournament is great. I really think that three more guys had a great shot, but it just didn't quite work out. Tom Mork wrestled very well, but was in one of the best weight classes in the tournament. He had an outstanding season and is a big reason for our success. Erik Kostik ended his fine career by pinning his way through the wrestle-backs. He accomplished great things in the little time he spent in this sport. Daub Bartylla, Chad Anderson, Zach Frink, and Justin Bergerson all showed the ability to get a medal at sections, but just came up short.
"Those guys are all underclassmen and will definitely have their day. John Morrison wrestled a great tourney and just came up a little short, but again is one of those that will do great things in this sport," Aho concluded.
Individual preliminaries were scheduled to begin yesterday, Wednesday, February 27 at the Xcel Energy Center. Kostik was scheduled to open the AA tournament against Cody Paulsen of Totino Grace. Suparat was scheduled to face Tommy Teigen of Meadow Creek Christian, and Arnt's first round opponent was Mac Stoll of Perham.
Match results were not available in time for publication in this week's Press. Possible match times today, tomorrow and Saturday depend on the results of each wrestler's first match. For updates, call the North Branch High School Activities Office at 651-674-1514 or visit www.mshsl.org
