TF skating rink a reality thanks to true community effort
Taylors Falls Elementary Principal Joe Thimm hosted the event at the rink, located on the east lawn of the school. More than 100 people turned out, many taking a spin on their skates around the 60' by 120' rink.
The Taylors Falls Park Board, along with the cooperation and assistance from city and school officials and several community members made the rink a reality.
The hard work of Jerry Waltman, Tim Fusco, Mark Clausen and Matt Carlson and other community and Park Board members helped secure nearly $5,000 in donations to construct the rink.
The site also includes a warming house thanks to some remodeling of an existing storage shed.
Attendees included State Senator Rick Olseen and State Representative Jeremy Kalin, as well as Taylors Falls Mayor Mike Buchite, council member Larry Julik-Heine, Chisago Lakes Arena representative Gary Lauritzen and Bob Wright, St. Croix Falls Youth Hockey representative and former professional hockey player.
Thimm said it was a great event and everyone enjoyed the skating, hot dogs and chili and meeting those who made it all possible.
The rink will need to be moved next year to a more permanent location on the school grounds, due to the construction of an addition and expanded parking lot. It will be moved adjacent to the wooded area on the east side of the property, but Thimm said it will be "bigger and better" next year.
Through an agreement with Lee's Pro Shop in Pine City, Taylors Falls students are able to rent skates for the season, to use on the new rink.
The rink is open to the public. Hours are posted on the side of the warming house.
