Wildcat gymnasts beat Vikings, place seventh at River Falls
Harris scores in mid thirties at three meets
Tuesday, January 8 CL scored 130.750 to Rush City-Pine City/Hinckley Finlayson's 134.675. Thursday, January 11 the Wildcats defeated North Branch 126.600-119.750. Saturday, January 12 the 'Cats 126.200 placed them seventh of 12 schools at River Falls.
At Rush City, "We scored our highest score of the season," said Wildcat head coach Brett Kjos. "After last Saturday's meet in Big Lake, the girls picked up right where they left off and put together some outstanding routines.
"Sam Thomsen, Cassie Schlegel, and Alicia Sokol all had personal bests on the vault - a great way to start off the meet. On the bars, Andrea Olson tied her personal best and both Amanda Bergerson and Maria Olson set new personal records on the balance beam. On the floor exercise, Sam Thomsen set a new personal best of 8.55. The girls are working very hard to improve on their routines and it's beginning to show with all of these new records being set," Kjos continued.
At North Branch, Britni Harris and Olson went 1-2 in the all-around competition and Olson won the balance beam with her best routine of the year.
"I thought this was our best meet of the year in terms of performances by the girls," Kjos said, "even though the scores do not indicate this. Lisa (assistant coach Eickman) and I can really see improvement by each gymnast since the beginning of the year. All of that hard work is starting to pay off."
Kjos described the River Falls meet, the largest one the Wildcats attend all season, as, "A Great meet that we look forward to every year." The team's uneven bar score, 32.200 was the best of the season for the 'Cats, with Thomsen setting a personal best (8.300). Britni Harris tied for seventh in the vault, fourth on the bars, beam and floor and was second of 35 all-around performers.
"Even though it was our fourth meet in a week, the girls really didn't show it," Kjos said. ""We had a little trouble staying on the beam and it seems, as soon as one falls off the beam, falling becomes contagious. We need a few days of practice without a meet to hopefully fix this problem."
The Wildcats' next meet is at Spring Lake Park Thursday, January 24, beginning at 6:30.
