Viking wrestlers defeat Zimmerman, place fifth at Cambridge Tourney
The Vikings beat an undermanned Zimmerman team 53-23 at home Tuesday, January 15.
"Zimmerman is another program that is struggling with its numbers, but puts out quality wrestlers where they do have them," said Viking head coach Tony Aho. "Our guys did not wrestle particularly well, but that is to be expected in a long wrestling season. Jake Kostik wrestled well in pinning a kid that was close with him last year. Matt Newham continues to improve and is showing a lot of leadership for this team."

CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI
DUAL TOURNAMENT
The Vikings finished fifth at the six-team Cambridge-Isanti Duals Saturday, January 19.
Cambridge-Isanti 52, NB 18
The Vikings led Cambridge-Isanti 12-11 after the first five individual matches, but Cambridge, ranked tenth in Class AAA, won eight of the last nine matches to beat the Class AA Vikings 52-18.
"Cambridge is a very strong team," said Viking head coach Tony Aho, "and without Erik Kostik and Matt Lutgen, we knew it would be tough to keep it close. Jake Kostik and Tom Mork looked very solid in defeating tough opponents. Chad Anderson and John Morrison both faced very good opponents and looked very good in keeping it close. Greg Arnt was very solid in pinning a quality Cambridge wrestler."

St. Cloud Apollo 42, NB 31
The Vikings finished well ahead of St. Cloud Apollo in a tournament earlier this season. Apollo turned the tables this time, however, beating the Vikings 42-31 at the Cambridge tournament.
"This one was a little disappointing because we finished ahead of them a few weeks ago," said Viking head coach Tony Aho. "However, we were a little short-handed today. Zach Frink built a nice lead, but, unfortunately, was not able to hang on. He is working very hard and will finish those kinds of matches as the season goes on. John Morrison avenged an earlier loss against a very game opponent."

North Branch 54, Pierz 27
The Vikings and Pierz were neck-and-neck before Pierz forfeited the last six matches to give the Vikings a 54-27 in the final match at a Cambridge tournament. "Patrick Mork and Stuart Frink are two young men who got a chance to show their abilities and looked very sharp in this one," said Viking head coach Tony Aho. "Andy Freel did a nice job today. Even though he did not get a win, he gave us a good effort every time."
