The 10U softball team qualified for state last week in a thrilling day of events.
The #25-ranked squad from Chisago Lakes opened the tournament up with a big 12-6 win over #13-ranked Stillwater. Shelby Houfer led the offense with a big homerun.
In the second round, CL fell to #5-ranked Centennial, 8-2.
However, since it was a double elimination style tournament, Chisago Lakes was still alive, and they took it to Lakeville in the third round, beating them 12-6.
In the last game to determine whether or not the girls would go to the state tournament, they were matched up with the number one-seeded Eastview team.
With Chisago Lakes up 9-6 in the last inning, Eastview scored one run early to cut the deficit to 9-7, and with two girls on, the Eastview batter smoked a ball to right field. Jessica Baxter fielded the ball quickly and got it to Shadow Irvine-Cahill, who was at first base, in time to get the batter out at first, but one run had already scored, and the other runner was coming around third.
Irvine-Cahill tossed the ball home into the awaiting mitt of catcher Quinncy Zupko, who tagged out what would have been the game-tying runner and ended the game on the double play.
Putching in the game, and throughout the season for the 10U team was Alexandra Smith, Alison Gajeski, Annaliese Mickelson and Irvine-Cahill.
The girls begin play at the state tournament on Saturday, July 12 in Cottage Grove. They received a first round bye, so the first game will be at 9:30 a.m.
