He was born on August 29, 1934 in Rochester, MN to Roy and Lucille (Denn) Hoffman. Walter graduated from St. Charles High School in 1952. He entered the US Army in the Korean War and served as Army Security in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1956. On September 6, 1957 he was married to Carol Askov in Delano, MN. He then attended and graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. in 1960 with a Bachelor Degree in Business. Walter worked for the Treasury Dept. at Honeywell for over 30 years.
His interests included outdoor activities, archaeology and history. He hiked over 4,000 miles with the Sun City Vistoso Hiking Club in Oro Valley, AZ. Walter was involved in the Historical Society in Chisago County and also enjoyed the North Shore of Lake Superior, fishing and canoeing.
Walter is survived by his wife, Carol Hoffman of Birchwood, Wisc.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Nancy Hoffman of St. Paul, Minn and John and Annie Hoffman of Taylors Falls, MN; a daughter and son-in-law, LeeAnn and Joe Geshick of Ely, MN; 6 grandchildren, Lucas, Cerrita, Kyle, Parker, Casey and Glen; 1 great-grandson, Mason; a brother, Denn Hoffman of St. Louis Park, MN; a sister, Margaret Radke of Orono, ME; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lucille Hoffman.
Funeral Services 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Appleyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, Wisc., Rev. Mark Bartlett officiating. Interment 1 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at the Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles, MN Friends may call from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Wednesday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals.
