Herman Nelson
He was born June 13, 1919 to parents Christian and Jenny Nelson of Centerville, MN. He grew up in Centerville, MN with his four sisters and three brothers, spending most of his early years working on the family farm. At at 21 he joined the Army serving his country for four years during WWII.
On October 14, 1948 he married Maxine (Swenson) Nelson of Almelund, MN. They were married for 57 years. While living in Chisago City they had two children, James and Barbie.
Herman and Maxine had four local businesses over the years. First owning a Café in Center City, and later owning Nelson's Fine Foods and The New Spot Café. They also owned the local vegetable stand, Nelson's Produce for over 30 years serving the local community with the freshest veggies and best sweet corn in town. After his restaurant years he went to work for Alexander Construction, and in 1968 went to work at the University Hospital retiring there in 1980, becoming able to devote all of his time to crop farming and Nelson's Produce.
During his life in Chisago City, Herman was a member of the local volunteer fire department and the Sportsman's Club. He had a love for the outdoors. If he wasn't gardening he was fishing or hunting or feeding the animals.
In retirement from the restaurant and vegetable business Herman enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, sharing stories of his past and driving around looking for wildlife.
He is preceded in death by wife Maxine, parents Christian and Jenny Nelson, sisters Myrtle, Marie, and Nellie, brothers, John and Edward.
He is survived by son James (Kathy) Nelson, daughter Barbara Lindgren, five grandchildren Rich and Randy Nelson, Chad (Shannon) Lindgren, LaRae (Dennis) Stiner, Stephanie (Jaymes) Poplin. Five great-grandchildren, Tonya, Taylor, Tori, Nicholas and Casey. Sister Jenny and brother Sunny (Chris).
Funeral services were Saturday, March 1 at Grandstrand Funeral Home.
