Work Skills Day brings three school districts together
Students are enrolled in the Work Experience Program at their respective schools. Managers and representatives from local businesses and service agencies serve as judges, lending their expertise and time to make this event a realistic and rewarding experience for the students. Work Skills Day is the culmination of curriculum that the students work on formonths in their classrooms. This event is a "real life" application of classroom learning.
This year's keynote speaker was Roger Revak, a Vice President with M & I Bank in Minneapolis. Revak shared his personal story of overcoming adversity in his professional life. He challenged event participants to never give up and to recognize their abilities to make a difference and inspire others.
North Branch Area High School Students Mike Mitchell, Nate Bachman and Jesse Magle, second year Work Skills Day participants, spoke about how they have used skills they learned in this program.
Many people make help make Work Skills Day a successful event. Area service providers and school personnel set up Transition Booths where students can obtain valuable information for their future. The individual school districts and administration provide overwhelming support for this event. Local businesses also support the event by donating items for door prizes.
Work Skills Day is an annual event and is planned and hosted by Work Experience Coordinators from the high schools involved: Janelle McNally and Brenda Kaeding, North Branch Area High School; Diane Menard, Chisago Lakes High School and Greg Hills, Rush City High School.
The St. Croix River Education District, along with the participating high schools, has sponsored this event for several years. The day continues to be a very positive and successful way of showcasing the outstanding achievements of students.
