Chisago Lakes Enrichment Days wrapped up with final sessions March 4 at Lakeside for fifth graders, March 7 at Taylors Falls for second and third graders and March 11 at Primary for second graders. Speakers included:

Glenn DelGiudice, wildlife biologist for the DNR: Mr. DelGiudice discussed research techniques used by the DNR to study wildlife.

Ryan Nyquist, USA Karate: Mr. Nyquist holds a second degree black belt in karate, and is an instructor at USA Karate. .

Dr. Amberly Hoyer, Lakewoods Chiropractic: Dr. Hoyer discussed the importance of using a properly designed, fitted and weighted backpack for school.

Karin and Bart Vukich: The Vukich family has participated in two Thrivent Build/Habitat for Humanity Build trips to Poland. Ms. Vukich and her son, Bart, shared their experiences from those trips.

Deann Alsaker, Recycled Wardrobes: Ms. Alsaker and her assistant, Joy, discussed the benefits of recycling clothing, and brought many hands-on examples of how all types of clothing can be re-used.

Jannelle Wesloh, Hazelden Foundation: Ms. Wesloh, a counselor at Hazelden, discussed some of the physiological and psychological aspects of addiction.

David DeMattia, Sleeping Dragon Studios, Ltd: Mr. DeMattia is a local artist who combines his expertise in sculpting, theater and engineering to create robotic characters for theatrical special effects.

Brian Koesters, Victory Motorcycles-Polaris Industries: Mr. Koesters is a project engineer with Polaris Industries. He spoke about his career as an engineer.

Patti McLoughlin, North Meadow Music: Ms. McLoughlin, a former music teacher, currently gives private music lessons for traditional and Suzuki violin. She introduced students to the violin and fiddle, and was joined by her husband, Superintendent Mike McLoughlin, for some Irish music.

Cynthia Carlson-Paetznick: Ms. Patznick, a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing, discussed the concept of how we hear. She talked about the structure of the ear, sound waves, and sign language.

John Olinger: Mr. Olinger previously lived in China for several years, and spoke about Chinese culture. He taught students some Chinese words, and brought many artifacts and clothing items from China.

Dr. Joseph Virga, Virga Chiropractic Clinic: Mr. Virga discussed the spine, and talked about the role of chiropractic medicine in helping the spine to function properly.

Jan Welsh, MN DNR: Ms. Welsh discussed the water cycle with students, and had them play an interactive game based upon the concept of the water cycle.

Kevin Brink, Brink's Market: Mr. Brink talked about his experiences as a grocer and business owner, and discussed nutrition and the food pyramid with students.

Kim Chueun: Chueun is an au pair from Korea, who shared her knowledge of Korean culture and language with the students.

Pat Tepoorten, North Branch Post Review: Mr. Tepoorten discussed his career as a journalist.

Pauline Salamand: Ms. Salamand is an au pair from France, who shared her knowledge of French culture and language with the students.

Kim Glenna and family: Ms. Glenna and her children, Matt and Elizabeth, brought their guitar, fiddle and upright base to share their knowledge and love for music with the students.

Pam Portz, Pleasant Valley Cloggers: Ms. Portz discussed the tradition and art of clogging, and had the students try some basic clogging steps.

Bridget Burke, Bodacious Baubles; and Diane Ritter, Puttin' on the Ritz: Ms. Burke and Ms. Ritter discussed and demonstrated the art of jewelry making.

Sally DelGiudice, River Valley Riders: Ms. DelGiudice discussed the physiological and psychological benefits of therapeutic horseback riding for people with disabilities.

Enrichment Days are designed to give students the opportunity to learn about a specific hobby, career or experience from volunteer speakers. Enrichment Coordinator Katie Kimlinger organizes the events at all three elementary schools.
