Vikings finish second at true team, sweep CL Invite
Jared Grams and Brian Grand participated in three of the five Viking first place finishes. Grams won the 100 and 200 dash events and anchored the winning 4x200 relay. The senior speedster covered the 100 in 11.65 and the 200 in 23.21. Grams combined with sophomores TJ Leason, Joe Klun and Grand to win the relay in 1:32.57. Grand collected the other North Branch wins by flying over the 300 meter hurdles in 41 seconds and the 110 hurdles in 15.73.
Senior Amanda Johnson and junior Catie Bettendorf had winning performances for the Viking girls. Johnson pole vaulted 8 feet 6 inches to edge teammate Sydney Swanson. Bettendorf earned 16 points for her team by clearing the 300 meter hurdles in 48.26.
"All of our athletes really performed well," said Viking head coach Brian Hasleiet. "It was by far our best meet of the season in our biggest meet of the year so far. It's great to see that we have the athletes who enjoy stepping up and performing in a big meet."
Area track and field fans will have plenty of opportunities to view the action next week. The NBHS track will be the site of multi-school boys' and girls' meets Tuesday, May 20 and Thursday, May 22.
Chisago Lakes Invite
Both of the North Branch teams worked to the top of the food chain at the Chisago Lakes Invitational on Friday, May 9.
In a five-team meet, the boys dominated the field, scoring 263 points. Fredric (WI) finished in second place with a score of 199.5.
Chisago Lakes with 111, Columbia Heights with 90.5 and Grantsburg (WI) with 14 rounded out the scoring in the boys half.
In the girls half, the Vikings enjoyed an even bigger margin of victory in the final scores. Their 283.5 was more than 130 points ahead of Chisago Lakes' 150.5.
Fredric scored a 144, and Columbia Heights with 67 and Grantsburg's 14 finished off the meet scoring.
The boys got off to a hot start with a first-place finish in the first three events. Grand's 15.68 was good enough to win in the 110m high hurdles.
Grams kept his blazing speed up, securing another first place in the 100m dash with a time of 11.33, which broke the North Branch school record by one-hundreth of a second held by Zack Kartak.
In the 4x200m relay, Grams, Leason and Grand teamed with freshman Anthony Ceroll for a first place time of 1:34.05
Leason and Klun were unstoppable in the 400m dash, as they pulled away from the pack early. Leason finished in 52.10 for first place, and Klun finished in 53.80 for second.
In the 1600m sprint medley, the Vikings used a mix of youthful enthusiasm and veteran savvy to earn another first place. Seniors Allan Xiong and Victor Oyesile teamed with freshmen Colin Charpentier and Kaj Johnson for a 4:06.94.
The relay teams stayed hot with another win in the 4x400. Klun, Grams, Grand and Leason teamed for a first-place time of 3:35.60.
In the field events, powerhouse John Morrison won the shot put with a toss of 48 feet 7 inches"
Leason kept piling up team points with a first place in the high jump. His 6 foot jump earned the Vikings 10 more points.
In the long jump, Ceroll leaped an amazing 19 feet 7 inches, more than 15 inches ahead of second place, and Klun launched his way to a 39 foot jump in the triple jump for first place.
In the girls portion, the Vikings again kick-started the meet with back-to-back first places. The quartet of Kendra Norman, Sadie Kolke, Shayna Gray and Miranda Charley won the 4x800m relay with a time of 10:02.54.
In the 100m hurdle, Bettendorf kept leap-frogging the competition, winning the event in 16.87. She also cleaned up in the 300m hurdles, finishing first in 49.07 seconds.
Sara Swanson earned a first place for the Vikings in the 400m dash with a time of 1:01.13. She also sprinted her was to a first place in the 200m dash in 27.34.
In other relay action, Shebert Croes, Jessica Audette, Johnson and Karisa Richard won the 1600m sprint medley relay in 4:52.88, and Kolke, Gray, Charley and Sara Swanson teamed for a win in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:17.30.
Norman raced away with a win in the 800m run with a time of 2:30.37.
In the field events, Johnson and Sydney Swanson tied for the win in pole vault, with each Vikings clearing 8 feet 6 inches".
In the triple jump, Kolke won with a 30 foot 5 inch jump.
