SEC. 7AA TRUE TEAM MEET

Girls

The Wildcat girls finished in fifth place, just one point behind fourth place Hermantown, at the Section 7AA True Team track meet Tuesday, May 6 at Grand Rapids.

Brenna Coyle won the shot put to give the Wildcats their only individual champion of the day. Coyle came in second in the discus, an event she's won a number of times this year. Coyle had a respectable throw of over 99 feet in the discus, but finished second to a Grand Rapids thrower who threw it nearly 50 feet farther.

The girls won both sprint relays, with three girls participating on both winning teams. The 4 by 200 team consisted of freshman Lauren Althaus, senior Linnea Osterberg, senior Tory Zais and junior MacKenzie Maher. Althaus, Osterberg and Maher were also on the 4 by 100 team, joined by freshman Hannah Fredrickson.

Three Wildcats had personal bests on the day. Sam Genung's 15 feet, 6.5 inches was good for third place in the long jump; Lindsey Fowler-Wacholz went 34 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump, coming in second place, and eighth-grader Whitney Tinjum came in eighth place, as she ran the 400 meter dash in 1 minute, 5.01 seconds.

Orwoll singled out a sophomore who's beginning to show her potential. "Kristina Miller had a very good day," he said. Miller finished fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put.

In the True Team format, each team is allowed up to two participants in each individual event, and all participants who finish an event earn points for their team. The Wildcats' team score was affected because they only had one participant in a number of events. "We're just not deep enough," said Wildcat head coach Ken Orwoll. "But the girls who were here today really took it seriously and went out hard. I'm proud of how they performed today. They're a pretty exciting group to watch."

Boys

The boys finished in seventh place at the True Team meet. They had no first place finishers, either in individual or relay events, but did have some good performances.

The 4 by 800 relay team of sophomores Brad Johnson, Alex Walter and Dom Novak and senior Nathan Gieske finished in second place and gave the Wildcats a glimpse of the current and future strength they have at the middle distances. "They all had pretty good splits," said Orwoll. "They're a good group of hard working guys and it's nice to see them have some success."

Sophomore Manny Cruceru set a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 55.66 seconds.

Girls

The Wildcat girls came in third at the Friday, May 9 Chisago Lakes invitational, held at North Branch this year because the Wildcats' home track is in the early stages of being replaced.

Chelsea Johnson won the 1600 meter run with a personal best time of 5 minutes, 40.61 seconds.

Orwoll said "She doesn't run this race often. She put together a really nice race. She was as tough as nails and is more competitive this year. She really goes after people in the last lap."

The sprint relay teams "went out and did it again," said Orwoll, winning both the 4 by100 and 4 by 200 races with the same lineups they used at the section True Team meet. Brenna Coyle committed a foul on each of her three preliminary throws in the discus and did not qualify for the finals. She redeemed herself, however, by once again winning the shot put. Kristina Miller had another good day throwing, finishing second in both the shot put and the discus.

Other Wildcat second place finishers included Hannah Fredrickson in the 100 meter dash, Whitney Tinjum in the high jump and Sam Genung in the long jump.

Boys

Wildcat freshman Josh Olinger brought some excitement to the boys' side of things at the Chisago Lakes Invitational, coming from behind to win the 3200 meter run in a photo finish. As a team, the boys matched the Wildcat girls, finishing in third place for the day.

Olinger led the 3200 meter run for much of the race. Freshman Viking runner Tyler Ertl passed Olinger on the last lap. Olinger caught up to Ertl and the two runners sprinted down the straightaway to the finish. Olinger won by inches in a photo finish. "There's no way you could tell who the winner was unless you were right at the finish line," said Orwoll. "It was a very exciting race."

The Wildcat 4 by 800 team of sophomores Brad Johnson, Alex Walter and Dom Novak and senior Nathan Gieske won with their best showing of the year, 8 minutes, 41.76 seconds. Brad Reineccius had a personal best in the pole vault, coming in second with a vault of 11 feet, 6 inches. "He's getting so consistent," said Orwoll. "That's going to help him a lot down the line." The 4 by 100 relay team of freshman Brian Kelley, Reiniccius and fellow juniors Mark Shaleen and Alan Swanberg finished third with their best time this season, 48.23 seconds.

Senior Max Molina will not be able to finish the season because of knee problems, leaving Gieske as the only senior on the Wildcat track team. Gieske continues to run well this year. He and sophomore Dom Novak both turned in times of under 5 minutes in the 1600 meter run, finishing fifth and fourth, respectively.

Orwoll said "We've got a lot of young guys, ninth and tenth graders, right in there competing and working hard all over the place. The younger guys are getting the opportunity to compete and taking advantage of it.

Conference Meet This Week

The Wildcats were scheduled to participate in the conference meet preliminaries Tuesday, May 13 at Spring Lake Park. They'll return to Spring Lake Park this afternoon at 4 p.m. for the conference finals.
