If you are looking for a way to get into the Christmas spirit, Shafer and Chisago City have your fix. Taylors Falls Lighting festival runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You will find an ad detailing all of the events taking place in this edition. You can see Santa and the grand lighting of the village on Friday night at 6:30.

Chisago City's lighting festival will be Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Moberg Park. There you will find horse drawn carriage rides, refreshments, caroling and most importantly Santa. Children are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa directly.

We have received a few entries in our community guide photo contest. This is your chance to win some money and also have your photo published and seen by over 19,000 people. I know that our area is filled with avid photography lovers, which also means that there should be plenty of wonderful area photos out there. Send in a print of a photo that you feel really captures the essence of the Chisago Lakes area to: Chisago County Press, attention Photo Contest, PO Box 748, Lindstrom, MN 55045. Or e-mail your photos to [email protected].

Congratulations to Alex Thomsen and Brogan Lee for making it to the state swimming finals last week. Both girls finished in the top eight which landed them on the podium Saturday afternoon. Not too shabby considering they are now in the top 10 swimmers and divers out of hundreds of swimmers and divers around the state.

If you are looking for a great Christmas gift this year the good folks of Taylors Falls have a terrific idea for you. How about getting your loved ones a Taylors Falls Lighting Festival ornament. These beautiful ornaments are limited (300), so that makes them collector items. The ornaments are $12 and can be purchased at many businesses in downtown Taylors Falls.

Parents, remember to have your child show off their coloring skills by entering in our 2008 Christmas Gift Guide Color Contest. If your child's entry is picked, he or she will win a savings bond from one of our local banks. There will be a prize given away for each age group, so get them coloring. If you need another Gift Guide, you may stop by the Press and pick one up. You should have received one in your last week's Search Shopper. Be sure to drop them off at the Press or mail them to: Chisago County Press Coloring Contest, PO Box 748, Lindstrom, MN 55045.

The County Press would like to wish the family of Gary Menne our deepest sympathy. Gary passed away this week after suffering a major health setback a short while ago. Gary was not always painted in the brightest light, but I can vouch for him being one of the most honest and sincere people you would ever want to meet. People that stand up for what is right and won't back down under any circumstances are hard to find in this world, and that is exactly what Gary was.

I am kicking myself for missing this last week, so here it goes. I would like to wish one of the most influential person who has affected my life beyond words, a very happy belated birthday. No, I am not talking about Oprah, or Martha Stewart or even Cheryl Ladd. I'm referring to my grandmother of 91 years Evelyn Silver. Although Cheryl Ladd did have quite an impact on me in my teen years, no one can hold a candle to Gram. She has been teaching me life lessons since I was three years old. I just wish I would have taken the time to write them all down. She once told me that there is one thing that the government can't take from you...family. How true. Happy birthday Gram.
