Chisago Lakes Middle School started recycling food waste during lunches this week. Students first separate out silverware and unopened food items (such as milk or condiment packets), then dispose of garbage and finally, dump food waste in one of two blue bins in the cafeteria. School Waste Reduction Coordinator Gary Noren obtained a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture grant through its Rural Development Program, along with funding from Chisago County, to establish the food waste recycling in Chisago County schools. In the coming weeks, the other four Chisago Lakes schools will start recycling food waste.
