Our area has a big ballot this year with elections for President all the way down to City Council seats. With so many seats up for grabs, as a voter, it has been difficult to educate oneself in each candidate's beliefs and intentions. Being that there are so many seats available this election, we the people of Chisago County really have an opportunity to make an impact. In some races, it would be nice to see some changes and new faces, but in others, I think for the most part, we have very capable people that are running our cities and county. It all boils down to your heart, and who do you feel is the right person to lead us in these tough times.
As I always say, no matter who you vote for, just please get out and vote. Because in the end, we have no right to complain about any politician if we fail to cast a vote. You do have a say.
As you well know, winter is right around the corner. With that said, now is the best time to buy apples. They are in their peak for taste and texture. One of my favorite places to visit this time of the year is Pleasant Valley Orchard in rural Center City. Judy Erickson who runs Pleasant Valley Orchards tells me that they do have a huge supply of fresh tasty apples. You can purchase Honeycrisp, Haralson, Honeygold, Cortland, Sweet 16, Connell red, Regent and my favorite the carmel apple. Hurry, because Pleasant Valley is only open until November 15. To get to Pleasant Valley, turn south at Hazeden to the four way stop.
Thank you all who responded to the Kids Outerwear Fair last week, for all of your donations of winter wear, money and manpower. Chris Bjorkland said that the event was a huge success. Get this, the coats that you donated, were given out to 107 families! 107. That is amazing. They gave away over 350 coats. If there is one thing that our area can hang its hat on, it is our willingness to give to charity. I am not sure where it comes from, but our area seems to come out in droves when needed. Thank you again for all of your donations, you are unable to hear it from the recipients, so take it from me...it is very appreciated.
Bjorkland also wanted you to know that even though the fair was a huge success, the need for winter wear is always present. If you would still like to contribute, you can drop off your gently used winter clothes and they will find people in need to give them to.
St. Bridget's is currently running a different kind of charity drive. The good folks at St. Bridget's are asking for hotel or sample size toiletries. These toiletries will be used at homeless shelters in and around our area. If you have a donation, you are encouraged to drop them off at St. Bridget's or here at the County Press.
Not to overwhelm you with charity talk, but Designers Salon in Chisago City is also partaking in a neat Christmas drive. They are trying to fill 35 Christmas stockings to send to troops stationed in Afghanistan. They are looking for new or gently used stockings, holiday candy, hot chocolate packets, hand held games, word puzzles and more. Designers will be accepting donations until November 29. Thank you for supporting our troops!
