Remember, ice is never safe

Some lakes are not safe for vehicle traffic, and in some areas are unsafe for ATV and snowmobile travel. Ice conditions vary from lake to lake and from one location to the next. There may be as much as 20 inches in one spot and as little as 2 to 5 inches in another. Two trucks went through the ice on lakes in Chisago County in the past two weeks; on Big Green Lake 150 yards out from the landing on the west ice road, and the most recent incident was out in the middle of South Lindstrom Lake, on the east/west ice road (pictured).

Remember that just because there are other vehicles on a lake does not mean that the ice is safe. Even ice roads and frequently traveled areas can be hazardous. Local ice fishermen are reporting some of the most unpredictable ice conditions they've seen in years. If you are venturing out, check with local bait shops for information on ice conditions. Check the ice yourself with an ice chisel, auger or a cordless drill with a long bit. Remember, ice is never safe. As spring approaches use caution and common sense.
