Kids keeping cool and learning at area Libraries thanks to summer sesssions on everything from nature to animation
Art teacher Laurie Beil, a North Branch resident, has been keeping quite busy over her summer "break" from teaching professionally. She instructed seven young cartoonists last week on a brief history of cartoons and animation, and then had the youth create a two-part animation project.
Beil is an instructor at Davinci School. She also led a class in late June, at the North Branch Library, on Art in Nature for younger kids 8-11 years of age and presented "Eco Arts" or making art out of re-usable materials.
You can still sign-up for a July 8 reading program at North Branch, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. for 5 to 8 year olds. Volunteers from Youth Service Bureau will be on hand to play games, share a snack and concentrate on the enjoyment of a good children's book.
Tuesday, July 14 is the date for an origami (paper folding) class with Beil. This is for ages 8 to 11 and will run between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
A digital photography session is coming 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 16.
Beil will demonstrate artistic tricks you can do with your digital camera. Just like the cartooning class, there will be pizza and pop provided for this evening youth class. Please provide your own camera.
Beil's final class this summer at North Branch Library will be Optical Illusions and Brain benders. Geared for ages 8-11 the kids will experiment and stimulate their imaginations. This session runs 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, July 23.
Many classes or workshops for young people are being offered through the East Central Regional Library system at North Branch, Wyoming and Chisago Lakes branch libraries this summer.
For ages 6-11 an on-going photography contest opened for submissions in June and deadline to submit a photo is July 18, youth can participate at all branch libraries.
And, there's always story time for pre-schoolers (ages 3-5) at all the libraries, each Wednesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. This is a nice chance to take a break, enjoy a periodical or just relax while your child gets read to.
Ask your librarian about reading programs and what events are happening this summer or check an informational flyer available at your local library.
