Students at Chisago Lakes Primary School, Chisago City, started separating their food waste from garbage last week during lunch. Student helpers are on hand to guide students through one of two stations for disposing of their food and garbage, and depositing silverware and trays. Bright blue recycling bins collect all uneaten food and beverages. The organic material is then picked up and processed into food for pigs at Barthold Farms in St. Francis. The program is possible through a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture grant through its Rural Development Program, along with funding from Chisago County.
