It is fitting in this edition celebrating Veterans Day to share the news of the Chisago County Veterans' Transport vehicle, which was dedicated in a brief ceremony November 5, in North Branch.

Chisago County Veterans Service Officer Jim Halstrom thanked all who helped make this purchase possible. The bus/van is driven by volunteer drivers, who transport veterans to the VA Medical Center in the Twin Cities. If you need a ride or just want to learn more about the program contact the VSO offices at 213-8901.

The specially-equipped vehicle has a mechanized lift for access to a wide rear door, it seats 12 and has space for two wheelchairs.

Support came from Chisago County, area veterans organizations, the Disabled Veterans of America (DAV) and many individual donors, along with major contributions from Eliot Scott and Richard Brennan.

Halstrom got two quotes from suppliers and purchased the best bid by Besner Bus & Equipment, at a cost of about $55,000.

The veterans got some good news at the dedication when North Branch Water & Light announced it will store the vehicle indoors.
