Loraine grew up in St. Paul, spending summers in Warroad, MN, where her father founded the Selvog Fish Co. With two Norwegian parents, Christmas Eve lutefisk and lefse were mandatory her entire life. She earned her degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota, where she was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega. Loraine taught primary grades for many years in Duluth and in the North St. Paul/Maplewood school districts. She was an accomplished pianist; she studied at the MacPhail Institute. She brought the love for learning and the love for music to hundreds of children, and will continue to touch their lives long after her death. It was in Duluth where she met the love of her life, WWII USMC vet, Fred H. Mackaman, to whom she was married for 55 years until his death in 2004. She and her husband were founding members of White Bear Lake's Parkview Congregational Church. Loraine was Parkview's first organist, a volunteer position she held for over 20 years.
Warm appreciation to the remarkable staff of The Margaret S. Parmly Residence for the gentle care they showed Loraine in her final weeks. She always told people not to make a fuss over her, but you can bet she enjoyed the attention.
A special memorial service was held September 15, at her home church in White Bear. Memorials to Parkview UCC.
