Ki Chi Saga Days is here, make sure to check out some new events this year, Threshing thanks
That's right, Chisago City would like to formally invite you and your family for a weekend of fun at the 41st annual Ki Chi Saga Days.
Ki Chi Saga Days is your last chance to enjoy a huge local celebration before...gulp...school starts.
Always a great time, Ki Chi Saga Days has really grown into a four day celebration with something for everyone. Beginning today, there will be city wide garage sales, a cribbage tournament and a community picnic which is held at the RiverBank.
Friday the garage sales continue and Frankie's Bass Tournament gets going. There will be a sand castle building contest at Paradise Park with a juggler who juggles items on fire. Stick around for the family movie following the juggling act. The movie "Up" will be shown on the lawn in the park. Last year my family watched the movie and it was a hoot sitting under the stars watching a movie.
Saturday is the busiest day of the celebration. Beginning with the annual 5K/15K run walk. The race begins at Zion Church on Old Towne Road. Registration is at 7 a.m., but you can pick up a registration form at local businesses. The race begins at 8 sharp.
Also on Saturday, put on your walking shoes and search for Moberg's hidden horn. Clues will be posted at city hall at 9 a.m. Moberg Park will be the site of the annual craft and vendor fair where you can purchase great items such as jewelry as well as sample some wonderful food.
There are a few new events on Saturday that the city would like you to know about. You can now take a helicopter ride around the area at Ki Chi Saga Days. You can take in a martial arts board breaking demonstration, performing twice on Saturday. Little Miss Ki Chi Saga will be crowned in the park on Saturday and the ever-popular skateboarding competition will take place in Chuckie Lundquist Park.
Sunday the celebration wraps up, but that doesn't mean the quality of activities drops off. You will still be able to attend the craft show, there will be more music in the park, a petting zoo (open all weekend) for the kids, and Elvis is making a triumphant return to Ki Chi Saga Days. The king takes the stage at 11:45 - so you might want to get there early. Sundays mean parades in Chisago City. The Grand Day Parade begins at 2 and runs north on Old Towne Road.
There is one event that I failed to mention in all of this. There is something really new and exciting. This year marks the first ever Ki Chi Saga Days historical pageant. Named "Chisago City: The town that moved", the play focuses on the history of Chisago City over the last 100 years. It is a light hearted, informative pageant that is filled with actors you will definitely recognize such as an elementary principal, an owner of a prominent boat and hardware store and many many more. The pageant will take stage at the Chisago City Community Center on Saturday and Sunday evening at 7:30. You can purchase your tickets in advance at Chisago Drug or George's Smokin' BBQ, the cost is $5.
I need to extend a special thanks to the Almelund Threshing Show committee. Once again they have put on a great event. If you attended the show, you know just how many people think the world of the show. As sad as it sounds, you keep expecting the crowds to start dropping off as the number of farmers seems to be diminishing, but that is just not the case. Looking around the show, it is filled with youth who either have an interest in farming, tractors or history. It warms the heart seeing so much interest shown by the area youth. The show was as great as ever and the weather other than a little shower on Friday, held up this year as well.
On the topic of farming, congratulations go out to the Burnsides who recently were chosen as the Farm Family of the Year. The Burnsides are wonderful people that have farmed the area for years and years. Please see page two for a special feature on the Burnsides.
In our house there is a sullen mood that has taken over recently. My son has just started another year of football. Don't get me wrong, it is not the football that gets him down, it is the fact that football signifies the beginning of school. It is like a roller coaster ride of emotions in our house. Excited about football and gymnastics, but as soon as a back to school commercial comes across the television, their spirits take a sour turn.
The only thing that bothers me (and I mean the only thing) about them heading back to school soon is that we really didn't get a chance to fish this summer. Last spring, I had visions of boring summer nights where we just drop the boat in the lake and kill four or five hours. As many of you parents know, that just isn't the case these days. First it was basketball, then came baseball and now football, sprinkle in a little golf as well and there you have a summer full of chauffeuring kids to and fro.
Believe me, I am not complaining about parenting, I am complaining about how few hours in the day there seem to be, especially in the summer. Can you please do me a favor? If you happen to spot me crying in a boat on the lake in the middle of the day in a few weeks, can you please not tell my kids? Those are not tears of sorrow, those are tears of joy.
