The Wildcat girls' hockey team took a 3-2 lead into the third period, but Irondale scored three unanswered goals to beat the Wildcats 5-3 last Thursday, December 16 at Schwan's Super Rink in Blaine.
Allison Borgstrom scored the Wildcats' only goal of the first period, assisted by Allison Ives, and the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of one. Scoring in the second period for the Wildcats were Katie Johnson, with assists going to Miranda Beimert and Miranda Krumm, and Megan Lushanko, assisted by Mary Burch. The Knights outshot the Wildcats 27-19 for the game.
Spring Lake Park/St. Anthony 3, Chisago Lakes 1
Illness, a suspension and a hot opposing goalie all factored into the Wildcats' frustrating 3-1 loss to Spring Lake Park last Saturday, December 18 at Chisago Lakes Arena. The Wildcats were without the services of leading scorer Megan Lushanko, who was out with a nasty virus, and Miranda Beimert, sitting out one game because of a game misconduct against Irondale.
The Wildcats outplayed the Panthers for much of the game, outshooting them 40-30. But Panther goaltender Katie Bassett vacuumed up nearly every shot, easy and difficult, that the Wildcats threw at her. The only breakthrough came midway through the third period, when Katie Johnson scored, assisted by Allison Borgstrom, to cut the Spring Lake Park lead to 3-1. The Wildcat attack increased in intensity after Johnson's goal and they poured shot after shot at the Panther net. Many of them missed their mark, there were a few whiffs and Bassett saved the rest to send the Wildcats down to defeat.
