The game is on for Chisago Lakes and North Branch robotics team
The game goes out via a live NASA feed simultaneously to 57 locations worldwide. It is estimated that 45,000 high school students watched the live feed.
FIRST Robotics began in 1992 with 28 teams. This season there will more than 1,800 teams will participate in 43 regionals in the United States, Canada, and Israel. This is the second year of the Chisago Lakes-North Branch Team. The team is self-supporting with the main sponsorship coming from St. Jude Medical. Other sponsors include Pentair, Medtronics, Lamperts, and Lee's Pro Shop. All mentors involved in the program are volunteers.
The game for 2010 is Breakaway. In the FIRST Robotics competition Breakaway game, two alliances of three teams will compete on a 27-by-54-foot field with bumps, attempting to earn points by collecting soccer balls in goals. Additional bonus points will be earned for each robot suspended in air and not touching the field at the end of the match. Robots must be able to herd and kick balls into the goal while only one robot at a time is allowed to play defense in front of the opponents goals. Each team has two goals and there will be 12 balls in play to start the game.
The CL-NB ICE (inter-district computers and engineering) robotics team has approximately six weeks to build its robot. The robot will be shipped to the U Feb. 23. The team will be competing in the North Star Regional at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota, April 1-3.
