U13 girls overcome tough opponent to win early season title
The squad won its first game 1-0 on a goal by Madi Lutz assisted by Hannah Nordby. Gabi Randall secured the shutout, making a couple of breakaway saves against CC United.
Game two was against NSS, who the WIldcats lost to earlier in the week 2-0. "We knew we had to play much better than we did the first time. Our girls rose to the challenge and tied them 1-1. Gabi had another excellent game," said coach Travis Delzer. Dani Berg scored the Wildcats lone goal on a corner kick. "I was really proud of the girls not backing down or being intimidated by this team," added Delzer.
Game three was a 7-0 blowout of White Bear Lake. Lutz had four goals and worked hard getting herself open for some great plays. The victory secured the Wildcats the number one position entering the championship game where they met NSS for a third time in five days.
The game was 0-0 at the half but Lutz scored on a breakaway in the second half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Half way thru the half NSS scored on a direct kick and the game ended 1-1.
No one scored in overtime so the game was decided with a shootout. Dani Berg and Lutz scored and Randall made a couple game saving stops to secure the championship by a score of 2-1. "We were missing six girls from our regular squad this weekend so we were very fortunate to be able to pull three girls from our U13 C3 team, Ceanna star, Sarah burch and Bella Hallberg," said Delzer, adding "we couldn't have done it without them." Delzer also credited his defense with the championship. "The championship game was won by our defense that never came out of that game, Venessa Seiberlich, Sarah Burch, Dani Berg and Lauryn Delzer." Though the entire squad showed a lot of heart, Randall stood out, playing goalie in the championship with a dislocated finger that occurred in pre-game warm-ups.
