He was born November 26, 1944 in Lebanon, Kentucky to Michael and Marcella (nee Abell) Matanich. John grew up in Staples, Minnesota and graduated from Staples High School in 1963. He was a member of the National Honor Society and a star athlete in basketball, baseball, track, and football. John attended North Dakota State University. He was the team's halfback and punter on NDSU's first undefeated National Football Championship team in 1965. John was later inducted into the university's Bison Hall of Fame. John was a machinist, and also taught machine shop at North Hennepin Community College. John was an avid fisherman, mainly on the Crow Wing River, with his father and brothers.
