Northwest Suburban Conference Race

With the temperatures plummeting and the snow hardening, the Chisago Lakes alpine ski team started to wrap up their regular season schedule with a meet at Trollhaugen on January 25.

Although the meet featured some tough falls and speed bumps by many of CL's top skiers, the boys still managed a fourth place finish in the 10-team meet.

Hunter Haas was the first boy to show up on the leaderboard for Chisago Lakes, as he had a combined time of 69.31 seconds, which put him in 14th place.

In 22nd place, Jake Sandgren finished with a time of 72.19 seconds, but that was due, in part, to a slight stumble on his first run. Sandgren has been one of the top skiers in the Northwest Suburban Conference this year.

Right behind Sandgren, Shane Anderson finished in 72.57 seconds, good enough for 23rd place in the meet.

Miles Turk and Anner Albin finished in 31st and 35th place for the Wildcats.

Hogan Haas had an impressive first run of 31.68 seconds and was well on his way to a top 10 finish, but a fall in his second run left him with a time of 76.45 seconds and in 46th place.

Joe Cartier actually had a worse go of it, as his first run of 29.70 seconds put him in second place in the whole meet. But, alpine skiing is about both runs, and Cartier tumbled in his second one, finishing with a combined time of 80.26 seconds in 51st place.

John Frischmon finished in 54ths and Tanner Rivard came in 87th after a fall in his opening run.

Centennial won the meet, scoring 548 points, well ahead of Irondale, who was in second with 511 points. Andover rounded out the top three with 489 points and Chisago Lakes came in at 453 points in fourth place, just edging out Champlin Park, who scored 448 points.

Girls

The girls meet unfolded like many have this year.

They place four girls high in the finishes, but can't crack the top spot because of their lack of depth.

Sheila Stephani was the the top finisher for Chisago Lakes, coming in fourth place with a combined time of 60.94 seconds.

Katie Rayer was right behind her in sixth place with a time of 62.48 seconds, and Teresa Sandberg was right there, also, finishing in 63.27 seconds in eighth place.

Amanda Engelbrekt rounded out the top four CL finishers with a 12th place finish in 65.39 seconds.

Then there was a major drop off until the next Wildcat clocked in. Claire Eikens came in 37th place with a time of 78.38 seconds, Lauren Peltier came in 29th with a time of 79.21 seconds, andBeth Swanson and Leah Bentfield went back to back in 45th and 46th place.

Abby Morgan finished out Chisago Lakes' finishers with a 56th place finish in 92.82 seconds.

Despite the high finishes from their top quartet, the Wildcats finished the meet in third place. Centennial won the invite with 440.5 points and Andover came in second with 421.5 points. Chisago Lakes was the only team even close to those two, earning 381 points. Coon Rapids came in fourth with 256 points.

NWSC Meet

On January 27th, the Wildcats had another conference meet, but things didn't go a whole lot different than their previous one.

The boys got their best showing yet from Joe Cartier, who finished in fifth place in the meet with a combined time of 55.08 seconds on the fast course.

Sandgren also cracked 30 seconds on both runs, going 57.58 seconds and finishing in 11th place on the day.

Hogan Haas came in just behind Sandgren with two sub-30 runs, finishing in 14th place with a combined time of 57.93 seconds.

There was a significant dropoff after that trio, with Hunter Haas the next Wildcat to finish, coming in 26th place with a time of 61.76 seconds.

Anderson and Albin came in 34th and 36th, respectively, and Turk and Rivard cracked the top 50, finishing in 42nd and 48th.

Dan Sagendorf and Frischmon finished out the varsity scoring by finishing in 61st and 67th.

As a team, the Wildcat boys finished in fourth place again, getting bested by Irondale in first, Centennial in second and Andover in third. They tallied 504 points.

Girls

The girls were able to move up to second place behind their top trio coming up big.

Stephani, Sandberg and Rayer went two-three-four in the meet, putting together some of their best times of the year. Stephani finished in 58.14 seconds, Sandberg in 58.32 and Rayer in 58.56.

Engelbrekt came in 22nd place with a time of 66.67 seconds, and that was the last CL girl to make it in the top 25.

Eikens, Peltier, Swanson, and Ashley Angel finished in 36th, 40th, 43rd and 45th, and Bentfield and Erin Sandell came in 49th and 52nd.

The Wildcats earned second place in the meet, scoring 382 points, but it wasn't even close to Centennial's meet-winning 452 points.
