Thursday night, February 3, at the Chisago Lakes High School Performing Arts Center, the Chisago Lakes district-wide spelling bee took place. In all, there were 30 spellers competing for the opportunity to be crowned the district spelling champion and to earn the right to go to the regional spelling bee in St. Cloud. Early in the bee, words like "unkempt" and "yeti" tripped up the local spellers, but by the fifth round, there were three spellers left: Ali Saueressig, Alexandra Smith, and Frank Brezany. In the end, it was the word "cytoplasm" that was spelled correctly by Ali Saueressig and she was then declared the winner. Judging and pronouncing at the event were Keith Carlson, Michael McLoughlin, Cindi Franer, and Kathy Kirvida. Community Education would like to thank these judges for volunteering their time.
