Gordon was born February 25, 1946 in Ashland, Wisconsin to Ralph and Esther (Johnson) Swanson. He attended schools in North Branch graduating in 1965. After high school he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam from 1966 to 1969 where he received the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Metal with three stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge. After his return to the United States he worked as a Construction Laborer from 1970 to 2000. He married Katherine Douglas on July 7, 1984. Gordy had a soft heart and loved animals, gardening, deer hunting, snowmobiling and cutting wood. He also enjoyed muscle cars and NASCAR racing.
He is survived by his brothers, Gary (Janet) Swanson of Alexandria; John (Janet) Swanson of Sunrise and Roger (Rachel) Swanson of Paso Robles, CA; nephews, Zack (Meghan) Swanson, Luke (Loralee) Swanson, Link (Kathryn) Swanson, Roy Swanson, Seth Swanson and Sean Swanson; nieces, Hannah Swanson, Jacquelyn Swanson and Mandi (James) Granlund.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kate and brothers, Jerry, Claude and Tom.
Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at Sunrise Bible Church at Sunrise with Rev. James Rockensock officiating. Music was provided by Charlotte Wilcox and Anne Miklya. Interment on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis with full military honors. Serving as casket bearers were Zack Swanson, Link Swanson, Roy Swanson, Tom Remer and Art Lowe.
