Veterans very much appreciated at schools

I asked some teachers to have their students write down what Veterans mean to them. The following is from a student in Mrs. Julik-Heine's third grade class, it is about Veteran's Day but applies to all veterans:

To me Veterans Day means it is a day to honor those who fought for our country during all wars.

For some people it's going to the cemetery and putting flowers on graves. To me Veterans Day means to honor the people who fought for our freedom and liberty.

To me Veterans Day means to honor people who were brave enough in these dangerous wars just to give our country freedom. To me Veterans Day means to be proud of our country and its veterans.

This does a great job of telling us how we owe much to veterans. She mentions freedom and liberty. Schools have benefited greatly by our veteran's sacrifices. We have the right to teach and help each student to grow both academically and socially in our country. Our veterans didn't fight for just some but for all people. Our veterans gave us the right not only to disagree, but also to allow for different points of view. I know our schools would look very different without the veterans contributions to our way of life.

As do most schools, Taylors Falls Elementary honored its local veterans in early November. We had coffee and lunch for over 50 veterans who attended. Our students were given the opportunity to visit with the veterans and make cards for them. It was rewarding to see the interaction between the students and their honored guests.

Yes, we owe veterans our thanks and esteem. I think all of us either know or are related to a veteran. Each of us need to remember and honor them. The following is a poem I have in my office to honor my dad who was a veteran of World War II.

It is the VETERAN,

not the preacher,

who has given us freedom

of religion.

It is the VETERAN,

not the reporter,

who has given us freedom

of the press.

It is the VETERAN,

not the poet,

who has given us freedom

of speech.

It is the VETERAN,

not the campus organizer,

who has given us freedom

to assemble.

It is the VETERAN,

not the lawyer,

who has given us the right

to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN,

not the politician,

who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,

who salutes the Flag,

who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,

AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT

SHINE UPON THEM.
