Chisago Lakes 97, Robbinsdale Cooper 75
The Chisago Lakes boys swimming and diving team got a nice reprieve after their uber-intense past two weeks of True Team Sections and True Team State.
They took on an outmatched Robbinsdale Cooper squad that doesn’t have the talent, depth, numbers or times that Chisago Lakes does.
"This was a meet where we could really flip our lineup around and have some fun,” Head Coach Mark Nordby said. “I could tell the guys enjoyed some ‘new’ events and it made it entertaining for me as well. We've been pounding some intense yardage lately so I was pleased with many of the times.”
Most of the lineup was jumbled up to provide some of the guys with fresh, new challenges, and CL responded well. By the end of the diving portion of the event, the ‘Cats had a 58-17 lead that was basically insurmountable by that point.
“I felt our IMers, Lange, Darling, and Falkowski did very well for not having swam the individual medley at all this year,” Nordby said. “We work all four strokes throughout the week so it looks like it's paying off. As of right now, we've got eight or nine guys at 2:23 or lower in the IM. That's pretty good depth.”
One of the events that did feature top performers was the 200 free relay. Sam Engel, Mitch Gebauer, Eric Barnes and Avery Turman smashed the oldest pool record still on the board, besting the previous mark set by Princeton in 2001 by almost two seconds.
“The guys have been eyeballing that record and based on times each individual has swam this year, I knew they'd get it,” Nordby said proudly after the meet. “For me it was more a question of by how much time could they beat the record by. Two seconds is huge in swimming.”
The Wildcats have a meet with Irondale this week, their last before the North Suburban Conference showdown between unbeaten teams with Benilde-St. Margaret’s.
But, Nordby doesn’t want to look past Irondale quite yet. Although on paper, the ‘Cats should beat them, the meet is being swam at Irondale, which features only a four lane pool and that negates a lot of CL’s depth. “It favors a team with top end talent rather than a deep team,” Nordby said cautiously. “We'll definitely need to be ready to get after it against them.”
The meet is on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.
