“We had a good chance to win this one,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon, “but we had a little bad luck before the match even started.  Mora won the coin toss, which enabled them to decide whether to send out their wrestler first in the odd or even numbered matches.  This allowed them to get more of the match ups they wanted to and was a key factor in their win.  They are a good team.”  In the semifinals, Mora went on to beat Grand Rapids, seeded first in the northern part of the section, 42-18, last Friday at Nashwauk.  The Mustangs then lost to Milaca/Faith Christian, ranked ninth in the state and seeded number one in the southern half of the section, 45-25 in the section championship dual.

SECTION 7AA INDIVIDUAL TOURNAMENT PREVIEW
After sending five wrestlers to the state tournament last year for the first time in a couple of decades, the Wildcats have a chance to meet or even exceed that total this year.  The Section 7AA Individual Tournament will be held at Mora this year.  Two wrestlers from each weight class will earn the right to go to the state tournament.  The tournament will have sessions this Friday, February 24 beginning at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday, February 24 beginning at 11 a.m.  Official seedings for the tournament had not yet been decided at the deadline for this edition of the Chisago County Press.  Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon talked about each of the wrestlers taking part in the section tournament, including his best guess at where they would be seeded:
106 pounds – Kyle Schoenecker (8th grade) – Schoenecker made the state tournament as a seventh-grader last year.  “He looks like the number one seed this year and has a good shot to earn another trip back.” Schoenecker is currently ranked tenth in the state.
113 – Dylan Connell (freshman) – “Dylan should be the number two seed at sections, but is going to go up against three or four pretty tough guys in that weight class.  He is going to have to work hard to earn a trip to state.”
120 – Open – the Wildcats will not have anyone wrestling at 120 at sections.
126 – Joe Olinger (sophomore) -- “Joe will be unseeded.  We need to see if we can get him through to place in the top six this year.  That’s a good goal for him.”
132 – Kyle Merry (8th grade) – Kyle will see his first section tournament this year.  “He’s excited to wrestle and it will be good for him to get the experience of wrestling at sections.”
138 – Quade Zupko (junior) – “Quade has been to state a couple of times and is looking to earn another trip.  He should be the number one or number two seed at 138.”
145 – Bobby Sontag (senior) – “Bobby placed third at sections last year and is looking to take it a step further this year.  He will likely be the number three or four seed and will have to fight through some tough individuals to get to state.”
152 and 160 – Mark Sontag (sophomore) and Joe Virga (freshman) – “Mark and Joe are both a little bit undersized for 160.  They will wrestle off, best two out of three.  The winner gets to wrestle at 152 at sections and the loser will wrestle at 160.  Whoever ends up at 152 will have a little bit better shot to go to the state tournament.  Both will probably end up as a number two or three seed at sections.”
170 – Mike Shaleen (senior) – “This will be Mike’s first opportunity to wrestle at the section individual tourney.”
182 – William Pool (senior) – “William placed at sections last year.  He is moving up a weight class to get himself in position to go to state this year.  He could be seeded anywhere from second to fourth since he hasn’t wrestled a lot at 182 this year.”
195 – David Barwin (senior) – “This will be David’s first opportunity to wrestle at sections.”
220 – Jonah Westbury (junior) – “Jonah should be either the number one or number two seed.  He has beaten each of the five other top wrestlers in the section.  If he wrestles up to his ability, he has a good chance to go to state.  His top competition will be David Lang from Hinckley.”
285 – Chase Kammerer (senior) – Chase should be the number one seed.  If he keeps wrestling the way he has been wrestling all year, he will go to state tournament.”  Kammerer is currently ranked tenth in the state.
