The Wildcats continued their impressive season with a dominating victory over an overmatched Fridley squad.
They opened the girls/boys doubleheader on Friday, Jan. 13 and didn't waste any time putting the game out of reach.
Although Head Coach Craig Walker noted they had one girl who can score, he said they have struggled to put it together as a team, so they just had to limit that one girl.
Their full court press defense caused Fridley a lot of early headaches. The small Fridley lineup couldn't see over the Wildcat starting five, which featured four girls -- Whitney Tinjum, Bryanna Fernstrom, Zoe Hansen and Brittney Land -- that are over 5'11". Their fifth member was jitterbug Hannah Trandahl, whose quickness makes her tough to follow on the court, no matter her size.
"Whitney, Brittney and Zoe scored early off turnovers from our press and they all worked well together with Hannah Trandahl to jump out early," Walker said.
When the Tigers were able to move the ball into the offensive zone, the 'Cats size limited their abilites and shot selection. And if they missed, the rebound was gobbled up by Chisago Lakes.
Tinjum ended up scoring 24 of her game-high 31 points in the first half. She also added six rebounds and four assists.
The Wildcats were on cruise control in the second half and coasted to the 42 point victory 92-50.
Land earned her first career double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Fernstrom also had a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
Trandahl also set a career mark for helpers, dishing out seven assists to her lethal teammates. Annie Stenson netted 15 points in the rout.
"We played well inside offensively and defensively. Bry had her typical game for us and Brittney played great, cleaning up the offensive rebounds putting them back," Walker said. "Annie Stenson continued where she left off in the second half at North Branch dropping in four threes."
With 92 points, there was bound to be plenty of girls getting in on the scoring, but the girls' play is continually impressing Walker.
"We continue to play unselfishly," he said. "The girls set a season high with 21 assists and continue to look for their teammates in good scoring situations."
