Students and teachers at Lakes International Language Academy (LILA) enjoyed a special lesson from a visiting teaching artist, funded by a dance grant from the Perpich Center for the Arts in Education.
The grant, now in its second year, promotes the incorporation of dance and movement into the LILA curriculum through teacher workshops and student participation with a teaching artist from the Perpich Center.
Physical Education teacher Jenni Muras explained, “Teachers and students in third through sixth grade have been able to work with our visiting artist, Christopher Yeager, to understand the ways that movement opens new pathways to learning. Though at first some were a bit self-conscious, the kids demonstrated being good risk-takers and really enjoyed learning the dances from Christopher.” She smiled, “I think disco was their favorite!”
LILA will host a family dance night from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, to celebrate “Carnaval” and give students an opportunity to show off their new dance skills.
LILA is a public K-6 International Baccalaureate World School offering both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese immersion tracks tuition-free to area children. LILA will host a school tour for interested families Tuesday, March 13, from 8:30–10 a.m. and an open house Saturday, March 24, from 10-11:30 a.m. Call 651-464-0771 today to reserve a space.
