Jolly Promenaders square dancers celebrate 50 years
September is known as National Square Dance Month. The correct technical definition is square dancing is “Square dancing is a form of dance where groups of eight people working as a team perform routines as directed by a person known as a caller.” Dr. Oz said in his book, “You Staying Young” “Square dancing ... (is one) of the few activities shown to involve both physical activity and mental stimulation significant enough to reduce the risk of dementia - a true two-for-one example of using it or losing it.” All kinds of music are used. It is a universal activity so no matter where you go in the world the dancing is the same. It can lead to many new friendships, is never competitive, and the movements are graceful and fun. With this in mind, the local square dance club is offering a free introduction to modern square dancing on Sunday, September 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church Hall at 5459 East Viking Blvd., in Wyoming. Couples, singles and families, including children over the age of 10 are welcome. Professional caller, Brian Freed, will introduce a few square dance moves. For further information please call Curtis at 651-464-6179 or Dennis at 651-464-3060 or visit the website at www.jollypromenaders.org. The Jolly Promenaders Club is celebrating 50 years of square dancing with a free dance on Sunday, September 30, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Pinehaven Farm in Wyoming. The dance will be called by a national caller, Mike Hogan. Coffee and cake will be served. It is open to dancers and non-dancers alike. The Jolly Promenaders dance on the third Saturday of each month, September through May, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Forest Lake Senior Center. This season’s first dance is September 15. Spectators are always welcome to come and watch at no charge.
