If you flipped on the weather channel Tuesday morning thinking you would see reports of a tornado in Chisago County, I have some good news for you. That loud rush of air was not a twister, but a sigh of relief from parents around the area. The outrush of air is due to schools opening their doors for another year of school. I can’t speak for you, but in our home, we have noticed a few things that have differed from years past. Like now that our kids are older, they sure seem to snack a little more than they used to. We never have any groceries in our house it seems. Or at least when the adults need them. Chores - touchy subject. It seems like chores in our house take their sweet time to get done, until Dad’s pulling in the driveway, better get them done quick. Of course I am kidding (sort of), our kids have been great this summer and it is hard to imagine school starting already. So just a reminder to everyone out there who normally drives to work in the mornings, please be careful.

I know it is against the law to text and drive, I also know that many people do it anyway. Just remember there are kids on the side of the road now, so if you have texted before, looked up and saw yourself heading for the ditch and swerved back, well now the consequences are far greater. It might not be the ditch you are swerving at. Please be careful.

St. Bridget’s in Lindstrom would like to invite you and your family to a day of fun. They are hosting their third annual Block Party on Saturday and Sunday. What is a Block Party? Well for starters, it is a chance to have some fun locally with your friends and neighbors. On Saturday night there is a concert featuring Robby Vee along with a pig roast. Sounds okay, but maybe still on the fence? What about a $5,000 cash raffle? I thought so. There is a beer tent and you can also get other food such as brats and hot dogs. On Sunday, in the parking lot, there will be a market place where you can purchase crafts, baked goods and canned goods. There will be a meat raffle on Sunday. St. Bridget’s Praise Band will be performing along with other musicians. There will be inflatable games for kids guaranteed to make them happy. Great food will be served all day. A silent auction will cap off the weekend. So grab the kids and head to St. Bridget’s, why not have a little fun?

In case you missed it, the Chisago Lakes Wildcat football team did something it hadn’t done ever. They beat Mahtomedi, one of the best football teams in the state. Unbelieveable. After years of trying and having decent results, it seems like coach Bill Weiss might have something special this year. It appears we have got a quarterback that is more than capable in Mitch Berg. Mitch made some amazing throws against Mahtomedi. We have some great running backs in Eric Brown, Josh Parks and Quade Zupko. If you want some great entertainment where your kids can safely run around while you watch the game, I encourage you to come out to the Wildcats game on Friday. They will take on Fridley at 7 p.m. But you might want to come early, because the Chisago Lakes Gridiron Club is hosting a brat feed. You can get a brat, chips, and a beverage for a low cost and support a good cause.

It seems like every week I am writing about losing someone in our community. This week is no different.  We lost two good ones last week, Mike Alsaker and Mike Lizotte. Mike Alsaker was a great guy who could have a conversation with a complete stranger and when the conversation was done, they would be great friends. He is married to Deann who owns Recycled Wardrobes. Mike leaves behind seven children and a million friends. My heart goes out to the Alsaker family. Mike Lizotte is not known by as many people. That doesn’t make him any less missed. Mike is a teacher in North Branch who leaves behind a family of five. Mike has coached sports in the local rec league for years and years. If someone ever asked “Which guy is Lizotte?” the answer was always “The guy that is always smiling.” Mike touched so many lives. So many kids have looked up to him over the years. Both of these men were special in their own ways, but one thing they have in common is they were liked by everyone.
