North Branch Area Middle School (NBAMS), student group “Friends of Rachel” and the North Branch Rotary hosted a "Day Without Shoes." Students wore shoes to school, but paid $1 to go without shoes during the day. NBAMS will give the money raised to Rotary, which will then work with the Rotary in South Africa which funds SOS Africa- the school for the poorest of children in the South African townships. The money will be used to buy shoes for those students without shoes.
Students raised $594.50. Over half the entire student population went without shoes for the day! To make things even more exciting, an anonymous donor came forward and agreed to match what the students raised. The community donor ended up contributing $600 to support NBAMS's fundraiser. In all, a grand total of $1194.50! According to a SOS Africa spokesperson, the money raised will buy over 100 pairs of shoes.
