 Centennial Invitational at Giants Ridge

They say familiarity breeds contempt. The Centennial Invitational, which happens to be at Giants Ridge, the site for sections and the state tournament for alpine skiing, doesn’t quite allow a lack of respect to creep in. The course is always tough, but it usually brings out the best in some of the top skiers in the Northwest Suburban Conference and in the state. In their tune up before sections, the Wildcats finised eighth at the invite. They were led by senior Jake Sandgren, who finished in sixth place overall with a time of 1:15.45. He blazed down the blue course in 37.11 seconds, the fourth fastest time of the day. He was the 11th fastest time on the red course with a run of 38.34. Alex Derocher of Cloquet-Esko-Carlton won the race with a combined time of 1:11.86 Hunter Haas was the second Wildcat down the hill with 75 total points. He finished the courses in a combined time of 1:24.91 for a 31st place finish. Ryan Mower wasn’t far behind with a time of 1:29.59, which put him in 36th place. Casey Bennett was the last Wildcat score to count towards the varsity total. He finished in 1:36.33 in 51st place. Two of Chisago Lakes top skiers finished out of the top four, with freshman Tanner Rivard and eighth grader Anders Brown each taking a tumble on the blue course. Rivard had registered the 13th fastest time on the red course and Brown the 18th.

Girls
The girls got a spectacular race out of Ellie Frischmon, leading them to eighth place in the meet. Frischmon registered the third fastest time on the red course with a 40.06 second run, and then followed that up with the fifth fastest run down the blue course with a time of 41.09 seconds. Her combined time of 1:21.15 was good enough for fourth place overall in the meet, and 94 points for the Wildcats. Hannah Janzig was the second fastest Wildcat, finishing the two courses in a combined time of 1:33.54. Lauren Peltier and Claire Eikens then came in close to each other to round out the varsity scorers for the Wildcats. Peltier finished the race in a combined time of 1:42.94 in 44th place and Eikens finished in1:44.63 in 49th place. Ashley Angel had registered a quick 43.04 second run on the red course, which put her 16th fastest, but a fall on the blue course prevented her from moving up the standings.

SECTION TOURNAMENT
The teams traveled back to Giants Ridge earlier this week for the section race, where Sandgren, Brown and Frischmon moved on to the individual state tournament. Neither team qualified for the state tournament. For the full story on section results, check out next week’s issue of the Chisago County Press.
