Recycle day date moved, public art project approved
Shafer City Council met April 1 for a regular meeting. All members were present with City Attorney Ted Alliegro and City Engineer Jon Herdegen absent. With no public hearings scheduled, the council moved to consent agenda. The motion by council member Jesse Keeney passed unanimously. In new business, the council discussed moving clean up day to May 17. City Clerk Lynn Jawish told the council she would contact the haulers from last year to notify them of the date change.
The council then discussed this year’s citywide garage sale dates. The council agreed on June 12, 13 and 14 for sale dates. Mayor Kyle Johnson then told the council Maintenance Supervisor Alan Anderson would like to attend a training seminar April 22-24. The seminar is in Brainerd. Johnson reminded the council the city has already budgeted for seminars such as this. The council passed a motion for Anderson to attend by a vote of 5-0. In unfinished business, the council unanimously passed a resolution ordering preparation of feasibility reports on road improvements in Shafer.
The report will detail conditions of Regal Avenue, Ridgewood Avenue, and Redwing Avenue. The study is necessary for the potential road improvements to move forward. The council then agreed to hold a Human Resources meeting prior to the regular April 15 meeting. The committee will be reviewing applications for the vacant maintenance position. In open forum, Mayor Johnson told the council he has been approached by the Franconia Sculpture Park. They are applying for a grant from ArtPlace America and are asking Shafer to sign the application letter of support.
ArtPlace America funds mobile art in rural America. The plan would be to place sculpture pieces in the communities surrounding the sculpture park such as Shafer, Franconia, Taylors Falls etc. Art pieces can be tailored to fit area’s requests. The council agreed that a piece along the Swedish Bike Trail would be a wonderful addition to the city. The council approved the signing of the endorsement letter 5-0. The council adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
