A quilting workshop hosted by the Forest Lake Memorial Quilt Club early this month ended up creating a dozen quilts for veterans and a special flag-theme quilt given to the Forest Lake American Legion Post to be used for raffle fundraising. What used to be dubbed “National Freedom Day” has become Quilts of Valor Day in communities large and small across the United States. The Quilts of Valor organization presents custom handmade quilts to veterans, over 90,000 quilts have been dispersed.

Active quilting club members gathered in Forest Lake Feb 1 and concluded the day of quilting having made a dozen unique quilts; which will be distributed through the Southern MN Quilts of Valor organization, based in Hastings, according to club member Vicky McNally. Individuals are also welcome to donate handmade quilts to the cause. The local Memorial Quilt Club announces its semi-annual quilt show is April 25 and 26. to be held at the Forest Lake Legion Post. Visitors are welcome to learn more about the Quilts of Valor program at the show or see www.qov.org. “Quilts on Broadway” is the club’s show theme, watch for details closer to April.
