David was born in Alexandria, MN, the second son of Lewis and Dora Opheim, on March 17, 1951.
He and his family moved to Princeton MN in 1953 and then to Chisago City, MN in 1960. David graduated from Chisago City High School in 1969 and enlisted in the US Navy. He was deployed to Subic Bay Naval Station, Philippines and remained there until 1979.
In May 1973 he married Lita Libanan. They had four children; Raquel, Bobby, David Jr. and Lewis. They later divorced but remained friends.
In 1979 Dave and his family were stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Station in Hawaii. He trained and became a naval diver and a tug master while in Hawaii. He was discharged from the service in 1986.
David returned to the Chisago Lakes Area in 1988 and lived in Taylors Falls, MN. He spent several years working on boats on The Great Lakes. He later did trucking work in the Chisago Lakes area. In 2007 he moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He lived in Oskaloosa until his hospitalization in January 2014.
David is survived by his four children: Raquel Ramirez, Bobby (Jane) Opheim and Lewis Opheim all of Oskaloosa, Iowa and David Opheim Jr. of Arizona. He has nine grandchildren: Jessica, Jessabelle and Ikaika Opheim, Caleb Opheim, Storm and Catlin Cristobal, RJ and Vicent Ramirez and Desiree Opheim.
He is also survived by three siblings; Tim (Lynette) Opheim, Patty (Lawrence) Svien and Kris (Brad) Skoog, brother in law Brian Gahr and 10 nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents Lew and Dora Opheim and his sister Debbie Gahr.
Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Chisago City, MN at 2 p.m., Saturday March 1, 2014. Visitation will be at 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date.
