A 33-year-old man from rural Harris was booked into the county jail last week, to begin serving a sentence for possessing child porn. Michael Lawrence Cloud was given 365 days, with a total of 60 months stayed, to be served if he can’t be law abiding and follow the court’s conditions for the next five years. Judge Schoffelman accepted a plea from Cloud to six counts of possession and another six counts of disseminating or distribution of the images were dismissed.

Cloud’s plea was an admission there’s a likely chance of being convicted based on existing evidence, although he didn’t admit to intentionally possessing thousands of images law enforcement seized when they executed a search warrant last year at his home. Along with serving 365 days; within the next five years, while on probation Cloud will pay a $5,000 fine, abstain from mood altering substances and be tested randomly, complete a sex offender treatment program, take his prescribed medication, will not own a device that allows internet access without permission from probation, cell phone or computers used by Cloud are subject to searches, and he will have no unsupervised contact with minor children.

Lakes Area Police took a report January 22 of items stolen from a pole building and utility trailer near Itasca Avenue. There was a texting harrassment issue and a medical incident involving a student having a seizure for the week at the High School. Sheriff’s personnel checked in at Lake Area Bank in Harris about 8 a.m. Jan 20. Staff said they were waiting for the electrician as the power was out.

Jan. 20 theft report. Two snowmobiles taken from a shed in Nessel Township. North Branch, Harris and Cambridge sent firefighters to a garage fire on Cedarcrest Trail about 4 a.m. Jan 20. The unattached building had a wood burner and it appeared the fire had gone for sometime un-noticed, and the garage was a loss.
