Gladys Peterson

Gladys Bennett Peterson died Wednesday, May 28 at her home in Chisago City, at the age of 91.

Gladys was born July 24, 1922 in Rockford, IL to Orville and Ebba Bennett.  After high school, she worked at American Cabinet and National Lock before entering the Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis in 1947.  She worked as a parish worker at Bethany Lutheran Church in Duluth until 1951, when she married Russell Peterson of Hector, MN.  Russell entered Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, IL in 1952.  Over the next three years they moved nine times as Russell served internships in Boise, ID, Joliet, IL, and Gary, IN.

Their first call was a two-point parish, East Chain Lutheran Church and Salem, Pilot Grove, in southern Minnesota (1955-62).  They then served Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cokato, MN for 19 years (1962-1981) and Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, MN (1981-1988).  Upon retiring in 1988 they purchased a home in Chisago City and have been members of Zion Lutheran Church. Gladys was the classic “pastor’s wife” – fully a partner with Russell in their ministry.  She was a gifted teacher, teaching adult Bible studies and going all over the state to lead workshops and retreats.  In retirement she continued to be active at Zion, teaching, serving on committees, and playing her mandolin in the Praise Band until she was 87.  She taught her last Bible Study class just the week before her death.

Russell died in 2012 and Gladys was blessed to be able to live in her home the rest of her days.  She is survived by son Wayne (Jackie) of Plymouth, daughter Joy (Rod) Sietsema of Lindstrom; four grandchildren – Benjamin (Michelle) and Kaitlyn Peterson, Ana (Mark) Hulzebos, Glade Sietsema; two great-granddaughters – Kaja and Liara Hulzebos; sister Doris Johnson of Rockford, IL, step-mother Hilma Bennett of Rockford, IL; nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. Sunday, June 1 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City.  Funeral service 1 p.m. Monday at church. Interment Chisago Memorial Park in Chisago City.  Memorials suggested to Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.  Condolences may be left online at www.grandstrandfh.com
