River fatality Sheriff’s patrol and first responders went to Taylors Falls Sunday, May 25 about 4:45 p.m. on a report of a man in the river, who had not re-surfaced after jumping into the St. Croix River to rescue a boy who fell in while fishing from the bank. Another adult male had also gone into the river and he helped the boy to shore. The sheriff’s spokesperson reported the search for the missing man, Touhu Vang, 21, of Coon Rapids was still underway by rescue and recovery searchers as of press deadline Tuesday, May 26. Fast moving river current and turbulence were hampering recovery.
Recovery personnel with fire departments from Stacy-Lent and Taylors Falls were at the scene along with Lakes Region EMS and national park service personnel. Lakes Area Police placed two bikes into storage that had been abandoned: one is a mountain bike and one is a 15 speed. To claim contact the Lakes Area police office and describe the bicycles. Two dogs-- a black Lab and a Cocker Spaniel were left at Northwoods Humane Society after law enforcement could not locate owners for the stray animals. There were five potentially suicidal incidents that he Lakes Area police responded to for the week of May 19 to May 24. One male juvenile was also transported for medical attention at Fairview Riverside after admitting to passing out from use of synthetic marijuana.
A Chisago Lakes Middle School student was cited for posessing marijuana May 22. Lakes Area got a report from a Chisago City resident alerting them of a scam making the rounds, that involves a check for a large sum made out in somebody’s name. But to claim the “prize” you are asked to send in a “processing fee.” Readers are reminded they should never send money to claim a “prize.” A 43-year-old North Branch man was being held on suspicion of drunk driving and an outstanding Pine County warrant, following a truck crash in Sunrise Township, on #95 (St. Croix Trail) Friday May 23 about 7 p.m.
Almelund Fire Department sent responders to the scene and a state patrol trooper was writing the incident. The truck took front end damage after apparently going off the highway and striking a pine tree. Sunday, May 25 a break-in at a home on Park Trail outside of Center City reported. Incident was reported by someone caring for the pets while the residents were away.
