Bernice Margaret Nelson was born July 16, 1922 at home in Wood River Township, rural Wisconsin to Nels O. Nelson and Stella (Gile) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed at English Lutheran Church in Grantsburg, WI. She attended North Folk Grade School and graduated from Grantsburg High School. Bernice married LaVerne Olson at the Lutheran Parsonage in Grantsburg on October 15, 1940. They started farming in rural Cushing where they raised four children and lived for 64 years. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Cushing.
Bernice enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, reading, embroidery work, being a homemaker and most of all attending family “get togethers.” The later years she went to work away from home at various factories, Vern’s Market, and cooked for the nutrition program at First Lutheran. She and LaVerne enjoyed many bus trips and playing cards. They also enjoyed the grandchildren and great-grandchildren they were blessed with. In her later years she moved to St. Croix Falls and then to the Good Samaritan Center.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers Laurence and Lyle Nelson and sister Beverly Norling, and granddaughter Jenae Johnson.
She is survived by her children Wayne (Gail) Olson of Luck, Karen (Chuck) Johnson of Lindstrom, Rodney Olson of St. Croix Falls, Ginger (Gene) Benson of St. Croix Falls, sisters Arlen (Bud) Lauer of Pine City, Donis (Gene) Benson of St. Croix Falls, brother Alden (Marion) Nelson of Oakdale, MN, 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 25 at First Lutheran Church in Cushing. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private interment will be in Cushing Cemetery. Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home – Edling Chapel www.grandstrandfh.com
