The banquet room at Split Rocks Entertainment Center was filled Monday night this week with honorees and their supporters,  enjoying a formal recognition event made possible through the sheriff’s foundation “Badge of Honor” program.  The privately-funded non-profit foundation delivered accolades to deserving individuals involved in 2014 and 2015  incidents,  whose actions saved lives through extraordinary compassion and composure in the field.

The honorees work in 9-1-1 dispatch, come from the roster of patrol deputies, they included officers and investigators,  firefighters-EMS and First Responders, plus several citizens were also recognized.

In selecting “Citizens of Excellence,” Sheriff Rick Duncan got to feature the Project Lifesaver program and two of its biggest boosters, Matthew and Katie Olsen. They have organized Project Lifesaver fund raising events and can be counted on to help spread the word about this valuable equipment.

Project Lifesaver subscribers are local people with traumatic brain injury, disorders or disease who may wander and can become disoriented and lost.  They wear a small transmitter and sheriff personnel are trained to utilize a tracking device if they should be reported missing.  Law enforcement personnel also visit regularly to exchange transmitter batteries and maintain a relationship protecting these special needs residents.

The sheriff also shined a spotlight on Arlen and Alice Burnside, presenting them with Certificates of Appreciation.  They have been strong volunteers for the department, especially during the Hay Days event.

Additionally-Citizens Angela Bardeaux, Bonnie Hanson and Shayne Schoberg were honored with Lifesaving Awards for their response this summer averting a tragedy at Kost Dam County Park.  On July 26 the three noticed two young people in distress in the water below the spillway. One party had been trapped under the water and was unconscious and CPR was immediately begun. Both individuals survived and Sheriff Duncan stated there would certainly have been a drowning at the park that day, if not for the quick actions of these three passers-by.

A Lifesaving Award also went to Deborah Christlieb, who was following her husband on his motorcycle in late October when it crashed. She was able to use a belt, placing a makeshift tourniquet on her husband Chris’s bleeding leg wound.  Deputy Chad Stenson arrived at the scene with medical equipment and the two are credited with Chris being alive today.

In another incident July 21, 2015, that resulted in a Lifesaving Award, the Stacy-Lent Asst. Fire Chief Kerry Olson raced to the scene of a dispatch call of a man not breathing and the man’s daughter Emily Lawrence was performing CPR.  Olson activated a portable AED unit upon arriving and Olson and Lawrence were applauded for actions credited with saving the life of Patrick Lawrence.

In another incident March 30, 2015, that resulted in a Lifesaving Award, Deputy Scott Swanson responded to Chisago Lake Township where a 51 year old man was not breathing.  Officer Swanson took over CPR and performed until EMT’s arrived. He then drove the ambulance while the EMT’s tried to revive Greg Cambpell. Cambpell’s wife Cheryl, gave a nice speech thanking Swanson for saving her husband’s life.
