Big Lake 143.85, North Branch 142.175
The Vikings gymnastics team saved their best for last, but it just wasn’t enough to beat conference power Big Lake in a dual meet on Monday, February 2.

The Lady Vikes traveled to Hornet country to finish up their regular season, and they registered their highest score of the season, a 142.175. Unfortunately for them, Big Lake scored 143.85 and narrowly beat them.

The Vikings out-dueled the Hornets in three of the four events, but a rough showing on the beam cost the Vikings. They didn’t place anyone in the top four in the event, and Big Lake made up a ton of their points there.

On vault, Mikayla Johnson earned second while Keeley Ertl and Katy Trunk finished in third.

On the uneven bars, Trunk earned the second place with Alexys Olson, who is still working back into form after returning from an injury, finished third.

Ertl notched a second place on the floor routine, scoring a very impressive 9.35 for the Vikes. Trunk came in fourth and Johnson came in sixth, but they both had scores higher than nine, showcasing the talent that was on display in the dual meet.

North Branch 136.975, St. Francis 134.2
The Vikings hosted longtime conference nemesis St. Francis last week and going in figured they had a fairly easy win in hand when comparing season scores.

However, just before the meet, Trunk was scratched due to an illness and that left the Vikes severely shorthanded.
“This season has proven to be one challenge after another,” Head Coach Barb Burdick said.

The meet was close after the first two events. Ertl earned the top score on vault with a 9.15, while Olson finished first in the uneven bars with a score of 8.8.

After those two events, Burdick figured it would come down to the wire, but she didn’t worry too much. “I’ve realized there is no need to worry. As this team has done often, the girls pulled it together and had a strong showing on beam and floor to earn the win.”

On the floor event, Annie Gladitsch, who was competing in Trunk’s spot, led the girls with a 9.1. Ertl was right behind with a 9.05.
On beam, Olson had an 8.85, Ertl an 8.25 and Johnson an 8.4.

North Branch finished in second in the Mississippi 8 Conference, but earned the top seed in their section.

The Section 4A meet will be at Roseville High School on Saturday, February 14 beginning at 11 a.m.
