Herb was born June 3, 1938 in Tyler, Minnesota to parents Percy and Ethel (Daley) Heilig. Herb graduated from Chisago City High School in 1956. He married his first love, Betty Jo Johnson, on September 11, 1959. Herb and Betty went on to raise four sons, Michael, James, Thomas, and Jon.
Herb was employed with the North Branch School District for over 25 years. Herb’s passions and hobbies included gardening, trains, fishing, birds, writing poems, camping, spending time with grandkids, and establishing the Minnesota Chapter of the National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation.
On September 17, 1994, Herb married his best friend and love Darlene Anton. Herb welcomed Dar’s children (Sandy, Dale, Kevin, Jay, Susan) into their new extended family. Herb and Darlene enjoyed the next several years camping and traveling. Herb was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2010 and spent the past 17 months living at Ecumen of North Branch.
Herb is survived by his wife Darlene; children; Sandy (Randy) Lindemeier of Willmar; Dale (Kim) Anton of Huntsville, AL; Kathy Anton of North Branch; Kevin (Suzanne Bistodeau) Anton of North Branch; Jim Heilig of Forest Lake; Tom Heilig of North Branch; Sue (Perry) Humble of North Branch and Jon (Yvette) Heilig of Lindstrom, sisters, Janet Autey of North Branch and Judy (Sam) Harms of Sauk Rapids; brothers, Bruce (Pauline) Heilig of Lindstrom; Glen (Angie) Heilig of Clyde Park, MT and Steve Heilig of St. Paul; he is also survived by his 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren as well as his sister in law, Dollie Heilig of California and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jo Heilig; son Michael, brother Robert and stepson Jay Anton.
Memorial services for Herb will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Kost Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Dean Paulson officiating. Music will be provided by Kelly Rogstad, Jon Ekstrom and Marlys Christenson. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the memorial service at church, Saturday, January 31. Please join family and friends for a luncheon immediately following the service.
