After selling his business, he was a Minnesota Agriculture Inspector for Chisago County for 17 years.
He was actively involved in his community, county and beyond. He was a lifelong member, and had been a board member, of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Almelund. He was a 35 year member of the volunteer Fire Department, a charter member of the Almelund Lions, Almelund Heritage, Almelund Senior Club, Chisago County Volunteer Transportation Program, Chisago County Senior Federation, Minnesota Senior Federation 7 County Region, Area Agency on Aging. He served as an officer in all of these organizations. He was Chisago County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1992.
He also, as a volunteer, drove many people to clinic appointments locally and the Twin Cities and also to the airport until about age 90. He also accompanied Irene who played accordion at area nursing homes for many years and enjoyed visiting with the residents. He led a very full and productive life.
He will be missed and is survived by his wife Irene of 71 years, sons Richard (Judi), Chisholm, MN, and Gary (Gabe), Ottertail, MN, grandchildren Richard Sellman Jr., Carol Anne Shackleford, Tammy Corenblith, Scott Sellman, Kami Turner, Brian Sellman, Michael Sellman, Chris Sellman, Jeff Sellman and Patrick Sellman, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, a sister Marilyn Gulland, family friend Helmi Harrington and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son Duane, parents Arvid and Mabel Sellman, and brothers Glen Sellman and Sherman Sellman.
Funeral Services were held Friday, March 13, 2015 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Almelund and interment at Almelund Cemetery. Arrangements by the Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom. Condolences may be left online at www.grandstrandfh.com.
