Shafer Days is bigger and better;Apple Festival is this Sunday
The good folks that make up the Shafer Days Committee have worked hard to change Shafer Days. They saw a need for improvement and excitement. They have worked tirelessly to re-invent Shafer Days. When you come, you will see what I am talking about.
Beginning Friday, Pleasant Valley Orchard will be open. Also on Friday, the Shafer Corn Maze is open with over four miles of planted paths to manuever.
The Shafer Fire Department is hosting a family bingo in the fire hall at 6 p.m. There are two bands that will play Friday night. “Grind” - a high energy modern rock band will take the stage at Big Game Bar and Grill at 8 p.m. The band will be playing outside weaher permitting.
“Everyday People” will be playing at the Shafer Creamery for those who like a slower pace in their music. They take the stage at 9 p.m.
Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m. the firefighters invite you to their pancake and fixins breakfast in the fire hall.
At 9 a.m. the hunt for the missing clog begins. Clues will be posted at the fire hall each hour until found and the lucky finder wins a cool $100.
Beginning at 9 a.m., the fire department will do fire prevention demonstrations, the inflatable amusement opens at the bike trailhead, there is an obstacle course and rock wall located at the fire hall. There’s also a tractor show and the Pleasant Valley Cloggers perform at 2 p.m.
Shafer Days has always had one of the largest and best car shows around. This year is bigger than ever and begins at 10 a.m.
Big Game Bar will hold a bean bag tournament as well as a bouncy house and face painting for the kids (and adults) all day.
At noon, the famous Shafer Bank robbery reenactment takes place on the streets downtown.
The annual shafer Days parade begins at 4 and meanders through town.
At 5:30 p.m., there is a tug-o-war at the fire hall.
Get a babysitter for the kids and head up to the street dance. This year’s headliner is “Dirt Road Dixie” with American Idol competitor Cindy Schloer.
All event long, the Shafer Days Committee will be selling raffle tickets. There are some amazing prizes including a gun raffle, hundreds of other prizes and of course the “Ultimate Garage Package” which includes everything you would wish for to outfit a dream garage.
“Wow, you are right! That is a lot to do.” But wait, there is more... Almelund plays host to the 22nd annual apple Festival this Sunday. A one day only event, Apple Fest is one of the most popular events of the year. It signifies the beginning of Fall, the beginning of school and the beginning of the Minnesota Vikings season. Ok, let’s forget the last one. It does kick off the apple season, which is one of my favorites.
Apple Fest is a no-pressure, come and go as you want, just a relaxed environment that is filled with any and everything apples. You say you like apple turnovers? They got em’. You say you want some apple butter? It’s there. Apple sausages, apple pies, apple jams, it’s all there.
There is more than just eating at the festival. There are vendors with arts and crafts as well as apples. Bring the kids, there is a great petting zoo and a kids pioneer area where they can participate in hands-on activities from yesteryear.
There is entertainment throughout the day, beginning with bluegrass band Porcupine Creek playing at 11 a.m. River Valley Brass Band takes the stage at 1 p.m. River City Cloggers also perform at 1 p.m. Mystery Mountain Boys take the stage at 2 p.m. as does Pierre Pleau with his violin students.
Bring the family enjoy some great food and entertainment and leave with some great apples.
The festival runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., the weather is going to be great, I will see you there.
Tomorrow, Bill Weiss and his coaching staff would like to invite you to the wildcat Football game. The Wildcats take on Big Lake at 7 p.m. You are invited to please come early for a Brat Feed. Held just outside the stadium, there will be tons of food including brats, hot dogs, chips, and beverages. The feed begins at 4:30 p.m. and runs until 6:30 p.m. Stick around to watch the Wildcats beat the Hornets.
I had the priveledge of taking photos of the North Branch Homecoming coronation Monday. What a great group of kids they have representing North Branch and their senior class. In the end it was Chasse Thomas and Hope Jensen who will represent their school and the senior class on friday night as the Vikings take on Duluth East for homecoming.
Today is a very special occasion in Lindstrom. Lake Area Bank turns 100 years old. 100 years, wow that is impressive. In a time when you hear of banks being forced to shut-down or being bought up by the mega-banks, to stand in a small community, successfully for 100 years, is nothing short of amazing.
If you are a bank customer, they would love for you to stop in. They want to personally thank each and every customer for helping them achieve this milestone. They will have goodies all day in the lobby.
