The 5-3 record and their performance on the field attracted the attention of the 4th seeded alliance captain from Highland Park Senior High School. Team 3038 along with the team from Eden Prairie were drafted to join in the Championship playoff matches on Saturday afternoon. They took on the fifth place alliance in the quarterfinals in a two out of three game match and scored a decisive win 159-112 and 137-114 to advance to the semi-finals and chance to knock of #1.
Team 3038 dropped the first game 125-102 but bounced back to win game two in a nail biter 102-100 forcing game three. A victory in game three was not to be as one of the teammates flipped over and was unable to score points and they lost 165-60. The #1 alliance went on to claim the championship of the 10,000 Lakes Regional winning easily in two straight.
Mentor Tomy Cummings said, "It is a credit to our team that we were able to take one game during the semi-finals when no other alliance was able to do that in the championship round. Give credit to the mechanical group for keeping our robot going during the two days of competition and to the scout team for providing great information on other robots.
“Both the Chisago Lakes and North Branch communities can be very proud of this group of kids. They work hard, are committed, and have a lot of fun representing our two schools. We appreciate the support of our schools but also St. Jude Medical Foundation for awarding us a grant each year that makes this team possible. The entry fee alone is $5,000 plus all the build supplies, so we are deeply grateful for this grant.," said Mentor Becky Leuer.
Team 3038 will be graduating only two team members, Dominic Hufford and Cole Dalquist.
