Friday, the events begin ramping up. MidWest One (used to be Central Bank) will hold their customer appreciation day with food and games. Friday night is the popular sand castle building contest (everyone is invited to participate, bring your own shovels and buckets). The castle contest will be held at Paradise Park as well as face painting, cotton candy, ice cream and an outdoor movie featuring Zootopia.
Saturday begins with the annual Ki Chi Saga days 5k/10k run/walk. All are invited to run and you can register the day of the race. They will be registering at Zion Church at 7 am. Grab your friends and head to City Hall at 9 am for the first clue of Moberg’s Hidden Horn contest. Be the lucky finders of the horn and take home some cold hard cash. The theme of Ki Chi Saga Days this year is country music. Chad Edwards Band, The Framers Daughters, Red Dirt Road Band and Drop Tailgate will all play in Moberg Park this weekend. See the schedule for times.
Saturday at 10 am, Frankies will host their super popular kids fishing tournament at Paradise Park. Grab a pole and come to the beach - odds are your child will come home with a great prize. Also at 10 is the annual skateboarding contest in Chuckie Lindquist Park. You can register before the competition.
At noon the new Little Miss Ki Chi Saga will be crowned in Moberg Park. Frankies will host the street dance and this year’s band is West Side Band, who if you have ever seen them, put on a great show. Remember folks, this year’s fireworks show is on Saturday night off of Paradise Park and begins at dusk.
Sunday has more fun in the park with a magic show, cloggers and over a hundred vendors. The Ki Chi Saga parade will begin at 2 and run up Old Towne Road from Parmly to Lakeside elementary school. The entire weekend wraps up as always with a pie eating contest at 5 pm. So there you have it, plenty of events to take in, it can be done if you pace yourself. We will see you out there!
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing today. We lost a great friend and a community pillar this week. Herb Jangor has left us. I was absolutely shocked when I received the news as were many of you I am sure. I am really having a tough time with this one. Herb was such a great person whom I have been lucky enough to know and call a friend. Herb, as many of you know, was the head basketball coach of the Wildcats for years.
It was as a coach where he earned a reputation as being this uber grumpy, yell-first, coach filled with ire. Funny, those accusations and name calling came mostly from disgruntled parents. As any of the kids that played for Herb will tell you he had one agenda and only one agenda. That was making his players the best men in the best way he knew how. Was he gruff? Absolutely. Did he care about his players and students? More than you will ever know. Herb, simply put had one of the biggest hearts and the most compassion of anyone. He flat out cared. You may not have loved him as a coach, but if you knew him in the least, you loved him as a person.
Herb is in Heaven right now, that is a fact. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family right now. Herb will be missed - heck, he already is.
If you have been reading the paper lately, you would have read about the new Chisago Lakes chapter of Let’s Go Fishing. It is a wonderful program that assists disabled, elderly and veterans get out on the lake for a day of fishing and fun. The program officially opened a week or so ago and has been taking trips almost daily. Frankie of Frankie’s Marine has been unbelievably gracious by donating the boat and many other services. We can’t thank Frankie enough for making this happen.
